This session with Dan Chase reminded me of the music that was everywhere when I first moved to LA. Bands like The Knack and The Motels were everywhere doing music that I guess was called New Wave. I’ve worked with Dan Chase for a very long time. He does lots of records all the time for major artists. People like Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, Pink, No Doubt, Katy Perry, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Goo Goo Dolls, Bon Jovi and many more. Check www.allmusic.com for a list of his credits. He brought over an awesome singer-songwriter named Adrienne Spiridellis, and we did tons of parts at a lightning fast pace. Dan is amazingly fast at taking guitar parts and inserting them wherever he needs. I mostly use my Tom Anderson Raven for this session, but I started out with a Don Grosh strat that I love that I’ve had for a very long time. Richard Page came back for an overdub session. Richard was always one of my favorite musicians. I used to listen to this band called ‘Pages‘ when I was very young. When I moved to Los Angeles I was fortunate enough to meet him and work on some of the same sessions. For every guitar session I did he probably did 100 sessions as a vocalist, at that time. I remember we were both working on a record for Keith Olsen (Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, Eddie Money, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Rick Springfield, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Heart, Joe Walsh) and Richard was singing backgrounds with Bill Champlin and Tom Kelly. Tom Kelly became a huge songwriter after that (Madonna, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion) and Bill Champlin as well. Bill Champlin wrote the Earth Wind & Fire song called after ‘After the Love Has Gone‘. He went on to join the band Chicago. Richard never stopped writing amazing songs. The result of that was his band Mr. Mister and some beautiful huge radio hits that followed ‘Broken Wings‘ and ‘Kyrie‘ Amazingly, I got to audition for Mr. Mister when their guitarist, Steve Farris, left the band. I didn’t get the gig… but right after that I joined ‘Toy Matinee‘. His songwriting singing and playing are still superb, and these days he tours the world with Ringo Starr. Ringo has an all-star band right now with Steve Lukather, Greg Rolie, Todd Rundgren, Richard Page and Greg Bissonette – check them out if you can!
